| 17th Annual Invitation Lecture (20/11/09) |
|
Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BE Between the 16th and the 18th century, Florence was governed by the Medici. They collected a huge amount of curiosities and artistic objects, of natural specimens and scientific instruments. These last were made by the most important craftsmen of the time. The collection was at the same time a symbol of power and an image of the rich status of Tuscany. Scientists, engineers and cosmographers worked for the Grand Duchy to enrich the collection and to construct buildings and fortresses. This year's lecture will illustrate the Florentine collection of scientific instruments associated with the Medici and will focus on the role of the scientists and makers involved.
The Society is delighted that Dr Mara Miniati has agreed to deliver this year's Invitation Lecture. From 1979 until her retirement in 2003, she worked at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence (IMSS); from 1987 onward she was Vice-Director. She was also editor-in-chief of the journal Nuncius, previously named Annali delll'Istituto e Museo di storia della scienza di Firenze. The Festschrift 'Musa Musaei. Studies on Scientific Instruments and Collections in Honour of Mara Miniati' (edited by M. Beretta, P. Galluzzi and C. Triarico, and published in Florence in 2003) contains contributions by many friends and colleagues in and outside Italy. At present, Dr Miniati is emeritus curator of the IMSS and continues her researches in the field of ancient scientific instruments. The list of her published books and articles runs to 10 pages.
Members and the general public are welcome. Admission is free and there is no need to book in advance. Tea will served in advance. |
